Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc. (TIHGI), owner and operator of Resorts World Manila (RWM), recently formalized its collaboration with two of the country’s top academic institutions that harbor future talents in theater arts.

Through the Original Pilipino Performing Arts (OPPA) Foundation, TIHGI, together with the Meridian International (MINT) College and the University of Santo Tomas, signed off on a partnership to organize efforts in institutionalizing the advancement of performing arts in the country.

“The advocacy of the OPPA foundation is in line with our own. That is why this partnership is excellent for us and for Philippine performing arts in general and we feel we should work together to make that happen,” says MINT College President & CEO Baltazar Endriga.

These schools are just two of the five participating institutions initially tapped by the foundation for its inaugural year. Other partner schools include the College of Saint Benilde, St. Scholastica’s College, and the University of the Philippines, all of which offer academic programs geared towards theater and performing arts.

The goal is to support budding artists by way of scholarship grants in their respective fields – be it production design, dance, voice, scriptwriting, acting, among others. “The foundation is looking for passionate and dedicated students more than anything else. Individuals who are determined to pursue their course,” says OPPA Foundation President Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

With a funding of Php100 million, the foundation aims to cultivate Filipino talent by supporting the local industry through grants and scholarships, providing artists with avenues and opportunities for development, and elevating standards and capabilities by providing global expertise and resources.

“What the foundation really wants to achieve is to create an industry of trained professionals, whether it be technical theater or performing arts. We want artists to come in fully equipped and with something to bring into their production,” Yulo adds.
